About ISO files

The .ISO file format is a sector-by-sector archival copy of an optical disc. Governed primarily by the ISO 9660 standard, it stores the entire file system of a CD, DVD, or Blu-ray in a single, uncompressed container. It is also a standard format for game ROMs, including PlayStation 2, Wii, GameCube, and PSP backups. Alternatively, the extension is used for 2D technical illustrations generated by PTC Arbortext IsoDraw.

Historically, users relied on third-party software like PowerISO or Daemon Tools to mount or burn these files. While modern operating systems now offer native mounting, the format remains highly problematic. .ISO files are uncompressed and frequently exceed 4GB, making them difficult to share, email, or store on standard FAT32-formatted USB drives. They cannot be streamed natively over the web, and extracting specific files requires mounting the entire image or using specialized desktop archivers.

For efficient storage, extract the contents and convert them to highly compressed archive formats like 7Z or ZIP. If the .ISO contains a DVD movie structure, rip the video tracks to MP4 or MKV for modern playback across all devices.

Convert.Guru analyzes your ISO file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

Users also converted CSO, CHD, DISC, RVZ, PKG, 7Z, PBP, WBFS, CISO, GAME, ZIP, XBE and QCOW files.
