About ISO files
An .ISO file is a sector-by-sector archive of an optical disc, typically formatted to the ISO 9660 file system standard. IT professionals use them to distribute large software installations and operating systems. Gamers use them as digital ROM backups for consoles like the PlayStation 2, PSP, and Nintendo Wii. Software like PowerISO or 7-Zip handles the creation and extraction of these disc images.
The .ISO format has significant limitations in a modern workflow. The files are almost always massive, often exceeding several gigabytes. Because they are uncompressed by default, they waste disk space by storing empty disc sectors. You cannot natively view the contents inside a web browser, and mobile operating systems require third-party applications to open them. Historically, you had to "burn" them to physical discs or install system-level virtual drive software just to read the files inside.
To access the internal data without mounting, you must extract or convert the archive. For general archiving and sharing, convert your .ISO to ZIP or 7Z. This compresses the data and makes it instantly accessible on any operating system. If you only need a specific document or video hidden inside the disc image, extract those directly to MP4 or PDF. Drag and drop your .ISO file here to analyze, extract, and convert it - free, online, and without installing complex mounting software.
Convert.Guru analyzes your ISO file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.
If you want to convert ISO file to WBFS, MP4, MKV, CHD, IMG, QCOW2, PKG, DWG, DXF, DGN, RVT or RFA, you can use PowerISO or similar software from the "Optical Disc Image Storage" category. In the File menu, look for Save As… or Export….
To convert SLDASM, DGN, PRT, IAM, X_B, CATPRODUCT, SLDPRT, RVT, ASM, DWG, CATPART or DXF files to ISO, try PowerISO or another comparable tool in the "Optical Disc Image Storage" category.
The ISO Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our ISO converter.
