About WAD files
The .WAD file extension represents a diverse group of "Game Archive" formats, most famously the "Where's All the Data?" format created by id Software for classic shooters like Doom and Hexen. These files function as proprietary containers holding levels, pixel art sprites, and audio effects. The main challenge users face is that .WAD files act like locked ZIP archives; you cannot view or edit the assets inside using standard operating system tools, and the internal data (like the specific palette-based graphics) requires conversion to be usable in modern software like Adobe Photoshop. For Doom and Valve (GoldSrc) variants, users typically need to convert textures to PNG, audio to WAV, or maps to OBJ for 3D modeling.
A completely different but common variation is the Nintendo Wii WAD (Wii Application Data). These are encrypted install packages for Channels and Virtual Console games. Users often need to manage these for use with the Dolphin Emulator or for archiving purposes. Due to encryption and proprietary headers, these files are useless outside of the Wii ecosystem without specialized conversion tools.

The WAD Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our WAD converter.
