To convert other file formats to the "Firmware Image File" file type, you need software like NVFlash or a similar tool.
About ROM files
The .ROM file extension typically contains an exact digital copy of data from a read-only memory chip. Its most common use case is distributing hardware firmware updates, such as UEFI/BIOS upgrades for motherboards from ASUS or graphics card BIOS images for NVIDIA GPUs. In the gaming and emulation communities, it is also used for dumps of classic cartridges like the Nintendo 64 or Texas Instruments calculators.
These files are applied using specialized flashing utilities like NVFlash for GPUs or the AMI Firmware Update Tool. Game and calculator dumps are read by emulators like Project64 or WabbitEmu.
The main disadvantage of the .ROM format is that it is highly hardware-specific and strictly unforgiving. Firmware files are raw binary code; if you apply the wrong file, you risk "bricking" your hardware permanently. For emulation, the files are proprietary, often legally restricted, and totally unreadable by standard desktop applications. Standard online converters fail to process them because they do not contain documents or images; they contain compiled machine instructions and encrypted bootloaders.
When dealing with these files, users usually aim to archive them as ZIP for storage or rename them to BIN depending on what the flashing software expects. Converting the actual data is practically impossible without corrupting the file structure.
This file format is exceptionally difficult to open or convert because only the original hardware or a highly specific emulator can properly execute the raw binary data. If our analysis detects an unencrypted structure or a supported underlying archive format, viewing or extracting internal components may still be possible.
Convert.Guru analyzes your ROM file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.
If you want to convert ROM file to CIA, ISO, BIN, CHD, ZIP, IMG, DMG, VHD, VMDK, VDI, HDD or QCOW, you can use NVFlash or similar software from the "Hardware Firmware and Emulator Dumps" category. In the File menu, look for Save As… or Export….
To convert VFD, DMG, OVA, IMA, VBOX, ADF, PVS, VHD, OVF, ISO, DSK or IMG files to ROM, try NVFlash or another comparable tool in the "Hardware Firmware and Emulator Dumps" category.
The ROM Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our ROM converter.
