About MDR files
The .MDR extension is a classic example of a "filename collision," where multiple unrelated software vendors chose the same three letters to designate completely different data types.
Most frequently (approx. 21%), an .MDR file is an automation backup created by MacroDroid, a popular Android automation tool. These files are actually standard JSON text files containing triggers, actions, and constraints. Users often need to convert these to JSON or TXT to edit scripts on a PC or audit their logic without the mobile interface. The constraint here is that while the data is human-readable, re-importing a modified file back into the app requires strict adherence to the schema, or the import will fail.
In professional engineering contexts, an .MDR file may be a proprietary model file associated with MagicDraw (now part of Catia No Magic). These contain Unified Modeling Language (UML) diagrams. Because this format is heavily specialized, users typically need to convert these files to XMI (XML Metadata Interchange) for interoperability with other modeling tools, or export them to PDF or PNG for documentation purposes.
Less common but still relevant variations include legacy Point of Sale (POS) reports from systems like Maitre'D or CSI software updates (which are often just renamed ZIP archives). Finally, in the retro-audio scene, an .MDR can be a compressed ModPlug Tracker module. For these audio files, the goal is usually conversion to modern formats like MP3 or WAV for playback on standard media players.

The MDR Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our MDR converter.
