About MMD files
The .MMD file format is primarily used as a Mermaid.js Diagram Definition file. It stores plain, human-readable text code that rendering engines parse to generate complex flowcharts, sequence diagrams, and Gantt charts. Alternately, .MMD extensions are occasionally used as MikuMikuDance 3D model files, Mathpix Markup Documents, and legacy mobile skin templates. You can technically open a Mermaid .MMD file using any basic text editor like Notepad or IDEs like Visual Studio Code, but viewing the actual visual diagram requires dedicated rendering software like the Mermaid Live Editor or the Mermaid CLI. The main disadvantage of the .MMD format is its lack of native visual support in standard business software. You cannot directly insert an .MMD text file into a Microsoft Word document or a PowerPoint presentation and expect a chart to appear. It is strictly a developer-focused format that forces non-technical users to jump through rendering hoops. To make these diagrams usable in the real world, conversion is mandatory. For web publishing and high-quality responsive scaling, convert your .MMD file to SVG. If you need to embed the chart into emails, reports, or office documents, convert it to a standard PNG or JPG raster image. For long-term archiving and printing, converting to PDF is the best option.
