A .PLT file is most commonly a vector graphics plotter file written in HPGL (Hewlett-Packard Graphics Language) or HP-GL/2. These files contain a specific set of 2D vector instructions, such as PU (Pen Up) and PD (Pen Down), used by CAD software like AutoCAD or PTC Creo to send exact line coordinates to a pen plotter or printer. Less commonly, .PLT files store GPS track points for OziExplorer, garment patterns for Lectra Modaris, or binary data for Tecplot.
The main disadvantage of the .PLT format is its rigid, hardware-specific nature. Because it acts as a direct printer command language, you cannot open a .PLT file natively in modern web browsers, standard image viewers, or word processors. Furthermore, sharing these files for review is risky since the recipient will likely face a "File not recognized" error.
