About MID files
MID files (Musical Instrument Digital Interface) are small, lightweight files that store musical instructions - notes, timing, velocity, and pitch - rather than recorded audio waveforms. Because they contain no actual sound data, playback relies entirely on the synthesizer or sound card of the device opening them (e.g., the Microsoft GS Wavetable Synth). This creates a significant "compatibility quirk": a .MID file that sounds like a grand piano on one computer might sound like a cheap toy keyboard on a mobile device, or fail to play entirely if no soundfont is installed.
For consistent playback across all devices, users almost always need to convert .MID files to standard audio formats. For sharing or web use, convert to MP3 or AAC. For high-quality editing in software like Audacity or Adobe Audition, convert to uncompressed WAV. Musicians often need to visualize the data as notation; converting .MID to PDF or MusicXML is essential for printing sheet music. While rare, some .MID files may be GIS data files associated with MapInfo Pro; these cannot be converted to audio and require specialized geospatial software. To identify and process your file correctly, simply drag and drop it onto convert.guru.

The MID Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our MID converter.
