About IPF files

The .IPF extension is utilized by several incompatible formats, creating significant confusion for users. The two most prominent uses are the Interchangeable Preservation Format created by the Software Preservation Society (SPS) and the IBAK Panoramo video format used in industrial sewer inspections.

For retro-computing enthusiasts, an .IPF file is a "master" disk image of Commodore Amiga software. Unlike standard ADF files, these files retain the original copy protection and low-level magnetic track data, ensuring 1:1 archival accuracy. However, this high fidelity means they are often read-only and require specific emulator plugins (like the SPS library for WinUAE) to function. Users frequently need to convert these to the more widely supported ADF format for compatibility with basic emulators or flash cartridges.

In an industrial context, .IPF refers to video or index files generated by the IBAK Panoramo system. These contain specialized 360-degree footage of pipe inspections. The files are heavily proprietary, often exceeding hundreds of megabytes, and require the IBAK PANORAMO Viewer to open. Sharing these with clients who lack the software is a major drawback, driving the need to convert them to standard video formats like MP4 or AVI.

Less commonly, an .IPF file might be a source script for the IBM Information Presentation Facility used to compile OS/2 help files (source text), or simply a renamed PNG image or ZIP archive used by educational software like Oxford University Press iPack. For these, simply viewing the file header or renaming the extension often solves the accessibility issue.

Convert.Guru analyzes your IPF file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

Users also converted IFP, JPF, LHA, ZIP, IPR, JPG, PDF, IPT, PNG, BIN, RPF, CLIP and SKD files.

The IPF Converter Story

The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our IPF converter.
