An .ipr file is predominantly a 3D sculpting project file created by 3D-Coat, a digital sculpting software developed by Pilgway. These files store highly complex data including 3D meshes, voxel sculptures, texture layers, UV maps, and project settings. The major disadvantage of this format is its closed, proprietary nature. .IPR files frequently exceed several gigabytes in size and require an active 3D-Coat license to open, read, or modify. They cannot be previewed natively in Windows or macOS, nor can they be opened directly by web browsers.
Standard online converters fail to process 3D-Coat .ipr files because the internal data structure is undocumented. To use the 3D model in other software like Blender or Unity, you must open the .ipr file in 3D-Coat and manually export the data to universal formats like OBJ, FBX, or STL.
Secondary uses of the .ipr extension include automotive script files for Iprog+ diagnostics, and XML-based project configuration files for IntelliJ IDEA. These secondary formats contain either compiled hex instructions for car chips or standard plain text.
