The .rpf extension represents two distinct file types that often confuse users: the RAGE Package Format used by Rockstar Games and the Rich Pixel Format used in 3D rendering.
1. Rockstar Games Archive (Primary Use):
Found in titles like Grand Theft Auto V and Red Dead Redemption 2, these are encrypted containers holding gigabytes of game assets (textures, audio, models). Constraints: They are proprietary, often AES-encrypted, and cannot be opened by standard tools like WinRAR or 7-Zip. Users typically need to "convert" these files by extracting their contents to editable formats (e.g., converting internal YTD textures to PNG or extracting audio to WAV) for modding purposes.
2. Italian Tax & 3D Render Files:
Less commonly, an .rpf file may be a Rich Pixel Format image generated by Autodesk 3ds Max containing extra channel data (Z-depth, transparency), or a digital tax declaration file from the Agenzia delle Entrate (Italian Revenue Agency). Constraints: The render format is legacy and unsupported by most image viewers, while the tax file is unreadable without specific government software.
