About IFP files
The .IFP file extension is most frequently associated with the Internal File Package format, a proprietary 3D animation container used by the RenderWare engine for classic Rockstar Games titles like Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas and Vice City. These binary archives store kinematic data for character movements (running, jumping, driving) but are structurally incompatible with modern animation software.
Because .IFP files are optimized for 2000s-era game engines, they act as a "black box" for modders and animators. You cannot open them directly in standard tools like Blender or Maya, and they lack the metadata required by engines like Unity or Unreal. To modify these assets or use them in machinima, users must convert the internal skeletal data into universal interchange formats.
Best Conversion Targets:
- For Editing & Modding: Convert to FBX or DAE (Collada). These formats preserve bone hierarchy and keyframes, allowing manipulation in 3ds Max (often requiring 'Kam\'s scripts' or similar plugins).
- For Game Engine Porting: Convert to OBJ (static poses) or GLTF for lightweight web previewing.
- For InstallForge Users: A minority of .IFP files are project files for InstallForge. These are simple text/binary configurations that should be compiled into EXE installers rather than converted.
Convert.Guru analyzes your IFP file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.
Users also converted IPF, EXE, PHS, DOF and AMD files.
The IFP Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our IFP converter.
