About SKD files

The .SKD file extension represents two distinct, highly problematic legacy formats: AutoSketch Drawing files and classic PC game 3D Skeleton Data. Originally created by Autodesk AutoSketch, the CAD variant stores 2D vector graphics, layers, and drafting metadata. The gaming variant stores proprietary character rigging data for early 2000s titles like Max Payne by Rockstar Games and Return to Castle Wolfenstein. The primary disadvantage of the .SKD format is extreme obsolescence. AutoSketch was discontinued over a decade ago, and modern CAD software natively rejects these files. They are closed, proprietary binary blobs that cannot be viewed in web browsers. Users are often forced to maintain obsolete Windows operating systems just to run the original software. Game skeleton files are equally restrictive, requiring highly specific fan-made modding tools to read the bone hierarchies. The ideal target formats for AutoSketch files are DWG or DXF for CAD compatibility, or PDF for static sharing. For game skeletons, modern FBX or OBJ formats are preferred. Because this is a closed, proprietary format, it is extremely difficult to open or convert. Often, only the original software can properly read or export the data. Standard online converters universally fail to process .SKD files. We can inspect the file's binary header to confirm whether it is an AutoSketch drawing or a game skeleton. If our analysis detects a supported underlying or embedded format, viewing or conversion may still be possible.

Convert.Guru analyzes your SKD file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

Users also converted SKF, SKP, SKB, BAK, DWG, SKETCH, WEBP, PNG, JPG, PDF, LNK, BTW and INDD files.

The SKD Converter Story

The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our SKD converter.
