About SKD files

A .SKD file is primarily an AutoSketch Drawing Database, created by AutoSketch, a simplified 2D CAD application formerly produced by Autodesk. These files contain vector geometry, architectural layouts, electrical schematics, and technical dimensions.

Since AutoSketch was discontinued in 2008, accessing .SKD files presents significant challenges. The format is proprietary and is not natively supported by modern web browsers or standard image viewers. Furthermore, recent versions of industry-standard software like AutoCAD have dropped direct import support for the format, effectively locking users out of their legacy data unless they maintain outdated hardware or software environments.

To restore access and editability, the best solution is converting .SKD files to modern interoperable formats. For continued engineering or architectural work, converting to DWG or DXF is essential, as these formats preserve vector paths and layers for use in AutoCAD or LibreCAD. For sharing, archiving, or printing where editing is not required, converting to PDF ensures the drawing can be viewed on any device without specialized CAD tools.

Convert.Guru analyzes your SKD file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

Users also converted SKF, SKP, SKB, BAK, DWG, SKETCH, WEBP, PNG, JPG, PDF, LNK, BTW and INDD files.

The SKD Converter Story

The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our SKD converter.
