About GP5 files
A .GP5 file is a multi-track musical score saved by Guitar Pro 5, the industry-standard tablature editing software developed by Arobas Music. These files contain musical notation, guitar/bass tablature, and MIDI sequencing data for playback.
A common frustration with .GP5 files is their proprietary binary nature; they are not human-readable text files and require specific software to open. While .GP5 was the dominant format for online tab sharing for over a decade, it has been superseded by newer formats (.GPX, .GP). Users often find themselves unable to view these files without purchasing a Guitar Pro license or struggling with compatibility issues in free viewers like TuxGuitar. Additionally, mobile devices and web browsers cannot natively display these scores.
To overcome these limitations, convert .GP5 files based on your needs:
For Printing & Sharing: Convert to PDF to create a universally viewable sheet music document.
For Audio Production: Convert to MIDI to import the note data into DAWs like FL Studio or Ableton Live.
For Editing: Convert to MusicXML to transfer the score into other notation software like MuseScore or Sibelius.

The GP5 Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our GP5 converter.
