About GP5 files

The .gp5 file is a proprietary music composition file created by Guitar Pro 5, a popular tablature and sheet music editor developed by Arobas Music. It stores guitar tabs, standard musical notation, lyrics, and playback data like tempo and instrument settings. Musicians primarily use this format to compose, practice, and share instrumental arrangements. The file can be opened natively using Guitar Pro or open-source alternatives like TuxGuitar. A very rare secondary use is as a PlayStation 5 Game Project File by Sony.

Despite its popularity among guitarists, the .gp5 format has major limitations. It is highly restrictive and proprietary. You cannot open it on a standard mobile phone or web browser without installing dedicated software. If you send a .gp5 file to a bandmate who does not own the paid Guitar Pro software, they will not be able to read the music. Furthermore, the format locks your musical data; standard sheet music programs cannot easily interpret it without data loss.

To overcome these strict software limits, you must convert the file. For universal reading, printing, and sharing, convert .gp5 to PDF. If you need to edit the score in professional notation software like MuseScore or Sibelius, convert it to standard MusicXML (XML or MXL). To extract the raw musical notes for a Digital Audio Workstation (DAW), convert the file to MIDI. Drag and drop your file here to analyze and convert it - free, online, and without installing software.
