The .gp3 file extension is primarily a proprietary musical score and tablature file created by Arobas Music for Guitar Pro 3. Musicians use these files to store guitar tabs, standard musical notation, tempo markings, and instrument playback settings.
Because it is a closed, proprietary format, a .gp3 file is notoriously difficult to open without specific software. Standard web browsers and built-in operating system tools cannot read it natively. If you do not own a paid license for Guitar Pro, you are locked out of viewing the sheet music or listening to the playback.
To share musical ideas with non-musicians or users without the software, you must convert .gp3 files. The best target formats are PDF for printable sheet music, MIDI for raw audio sequence playback, or MXL (MusicXML) for importing into cross-platform notation software like MuseScore. Note that exporting to audio strips away the visual notation, while converting to PDF loses the audio playback capabilities.
