About GPX files
The .GPX (GPS Exchange Format) is the universal XML standard for storing and transferring GPS data, including waypoints, tracks, and routes. It was developed by TopoGrafix to ensure compatibility between different GPS devices and software, such as Garmin units and Google Earth.
While .GPX is excellent for interoperability, it has significant limitations for end-users. Because it is a text-based XML file, you cannot simply double-click to "see" your map; you require specialized GIS software to render the data visually. Raw .GPX files can also become unwieldy in size due to high-frequency data logging, making them difficult to share or upload to web portals with file size limits. Furthermore, data analysis is challenging in its native format - hikers and runners often need to extract speed, elevation, and heart rate metrics into a spreadsheet.
For Devices: Convert to FIT (Flexible and Interoperable Data Transfer) for highly compressed, efficient storage on modern Garmin fitness devices.
For Sharing: Convert to PDF or PNG to generate a printable map overlay of your track.
*Note: A small percentage of .GPX files may be tablature scores created by Guitar Pro 6. If your file contains music notation rather than coordinates, it is a proprietary format that requires the Arobas Music software.*
Convert.Guru analyzes your GPX file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.
If you want to convert GPX file to KML, FIT, CSV, KMZ, TCX, GEOJSON, SVG, JSON, MP3, WAV, AAC or FLAC, you can use Google Earth or similar software from the "GPS Data Interchange" category. In the File menu, look for Save As… or Export….
To convert MIDI, AAC, TTA, AU, WV, DTS, MID, FLAC, RA, MP3, PCM or WAV files to GPX, try Google Earth or another comparable tool in the "GPS Data Interchange" category.
The GPX Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our GPX converter.
