About GTP files

The .gtp extension refers to two completely different file formats, creating frequent confusion.

Most commonly, it is a legacy Guitar Pro Tablature file created by early versions (1.x or 2.x) of the Guitar Pro software. These files contain multi-track musical scores for guitar, bass, and drums. The friction here is significant: modern versions of Guitar Pro (like GP7 or GP8) use .gp or .gpx extensions, and opening these ancient .gtp binary files often requires legacy import filters or outdated software that won't run on modern OSs. For musicians, the best workflow is converting these obsolete archives to PDF for reading, MIDI for audio playback, or MusicXML to import the notation into modern free tools like MuseScore.

Alternatively, in electrical engineering, a .gtp file is a Gerber Top Paste mask file. This is a standard ASCII text file generated by PCB design software like Altium Designer or KiCad. It defines where solder paste should be applied on the top layer of a circuit board during manufacturing. While these are technically text files, they are unintelligible to humans. Engineers typically convert them to PDF or SVG for visual inspection, or to DXF for mechanical CAD integration. Less frequently, it may be a texture archive for games like Mount & Blade II: Bannerlord.

Convert.Guru analyzes your GTP file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

Users also converted GBP, GBR, GP, GP5, PDF, ANF, PRJPCB, GTO and ATP files.

FAQ

If you want to convert GTP file to ATP, INI, CFG, CONF, CONFIG, JSON, XML, YAML, YML, TOML, ENV or PROPERTIES, you can use Guitar Pro or similar software from the "Guitar Tablature & PCB Layout" category. In the File menu, look for Save As… or Export….

To convert ZSHRC, CONF, RCFILE, GITCONFIG, RC, PLIST, BASHRC, CONFIG, PROFILE, INI, PREFS or CFG files to GTP, try Guitar Pro or another comparable tool in the "Guitar Tablature & PCB Layout" category.

The GTP Converter Story

The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our GTP converter.
