The .gp4 file extension primarily represents two entirely different file formats: a CALS Raster Technical Drawing or a Guitar Pro 4 Tablature score.
The CALS (Continuous Acquisition and Life-cycle Support) variation is an older, standardized 1-bit raster image format originally developed by the US Department of Defense for technical graphics and engineering. Software like Trix Systems can view it. The core disadvantage is that modern web browsers, mobile devices, and standard image viewers cannot natively open .gp4 CALS files. They are an obsolete legacy format, making them highly frustrating to share with clients or modern engineering teams.
Alternatively, a .gp4 file is a musical score created by the legacy software Guitar Pro 4 by Arobas Music. It contains guitar tablatures, standard sheet music, and MIDI-based playback data. Because it is a proprietary format, sharing a .gp4 file with a bandmate or student who does not own a Guitar Pro license is a roadblock. They simply cannot open it without specialized software.
