About GP files

A .gp file is predominantly a Guitar Pro 7 Document created by Guitar Pro software. It is a ZIP-compressed container holding XML-based musical scores, tablatures, track settings, and audio assets used by musicians to compose, practice, and share music. Other less common uses include Gnuplot script files for mathematical graphing and GenPept protein sequence files used by NCBI BLAST.

The primary software to open these tablature files is Arobas Music Guitar Pro. While open-source alternatives like TuxGuitar can open older versions of the format, they frequently struggle to parse the updated architecture of modern .gp files.

The .gp format is highly proprietary and strictly version-dependent. Files created in Guitar Pro 7 or 8 cannot be opened by older software like Guitar Pro 5 or 6 (which rely on gp5 or .gp6 formats). This causes major workflow bottlenecks when sharing music with bandmates. Furthermore, the format requires paid, specialized software to view the sheet music and is entirely unsupported by standard web browsers or native OS document viewers.

To bypass these restrictions, you must convert the file. For printing or universal viewing across any device, convert to PDF. For importing into a Digital Audio Workstation (DAW) like Ableton Live, convert to MIDI. For editing the score in alternative notation software such as Sibelius or MuseScore, convert to MusicXML.

Convert.Guru analyzes your GP file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

Users also converted GP5, GPX, GP3, GP4, 3GP, PDF, MID, BINARYSTYLESHEET, JPG, ZIP, MP3, GPIF and GTP files.
