A .musicxml file is an open, universal XML format used to exchange digital sheet music between different scorewriters. It stores comprehensive musical notation data, including notes, rests, key signatures, lyrics, and playing techniques.

Despite being a global standard managed by the W3C, .musicxml files have significant practical limitations.
