MusicXML is the industry-standard XML-based format for sharing digital sheet music between different notation programs. Unlike audio files (WAV, MP3) that record sound, or static images (PDF) that capture a visual snapshot, .MUSICXML files contain the semantic "source code" of the music - notes, rhythms, dynamics, and lyrics.
However, this format acts as a "Rosetta Stone" with significant issues. Because it is an uncompressed text format, .MUSICXML files are often incredibly verbose and large; a complex orchestral score can easily become unwieldy to email compared to its compressed counterpart, MXL. More frustratingly, "universal" compatibility is often a myth. Opening a file exported from MakeMusic Finale inside Avid Sibelius or MuseScore frequently results in layout drift - staves colliding, fonts defaulting to system standards, and formatting breaking completely. Additionally, standard media players and web browsers cannot natively open or play these files.
To share music with performers for reading, the only reliable workflow is converting .MUSICXML to PDF to lock in the visual layout. If you need to demonstrate how the piece sounds to a client or bandmate who doesn't read notation, converting to MIDI or MP3 is essential. For archiving or reducing file size without losing data, converting to compressed MXL is the standard best practice.
