About GM files

The .gm file extension is a "chameleon" format used for vastly different purposes, making it difficult to open without knowing its origin. Its most common use (35%) is as a G-code file generated by SheetCam or Torchmate controllers, containing plain-text coordinate instructions for CNC machines (plasma cutters, routers). However, the file is also widely used in gaming (38% combined) as either a proprietary 3D model for the Akella STORM Engine (found in games like Sea Dogs and Pirates of the Caribbean) or as an addon file for Garry's Mod.

Users often have trouble because a .gm file meant for a CNC machine looks like gibberish to a game engine, and vice versa.

The GM Converter Story

The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our GM converter.
