About GM1 files
The .GM1 file extension is most famously used by Firefly Studios to store proprietary 2D graphics, UI elements, and animations for the Stronghold game series, including Stronghold Crusader. Alternatively, it is heavily used as a saved game file for Heroes of Might and Magic III. In the electronics engineering field, it functions as a Gerber RS-274X mechanical board outline file used by PCB design software like Fritzing. Less commonly, it may be an old LG mobile phone ringtone or a Guitar Pro music sheet.
The primary disadvantage of game-related .GM1 files is their locked, proprietary nature. Stronghold graphic files lack standard image headers, meaning you cannot open them natively in standard viewers or editors like Adobe Photoshop. Modders face frustrating limits when trying to extract these assets without community-built legacy tools. For Heroes of Might and Magic saves, the files are actually compressed using standard GZIP encoding, but the obscure extension prevents archive utilities from recognizing them automatically. Gerber .GM1 files require specialized PCB CAM viewers, which are heavy and overly complex for simple visual sharing.
To overcome these limitations, conversion or extraction is highly recommended. For game graphics, convert .GM1 to PNG or BMP to enable raster editing and web use. For game saves, extract the contents to a standard ZIP or GZ folder. For PCB outlines, convert the Gerber data to PDF or SVG for easy archiving and sharing with clients.

The GM1 Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our GM1 converter.
