About GBR files
The .GBR file extension primarily denotes a Gerber format file. It is the de facto industry standard used by printed circuit board (PCB) manufacturers to translate electronic designs into physical boards. Each .GBR file represents a single 2D vector layer of the PCB, such as copper traces, solder masks, silkscreen text, or drill paths. The format is currently maintained by Ucamco, with older files conforming to RS-274X and newer ones to Gerber X2. Secondary uses for the .GBR extension include custom image brush files for GIMP and pattern files for CAD/CAM fabric cutting software by Gerber Technology. While universally understood by fabrication machines, .GBR files are extremely inconvenient for human collaboration. They are plain-text ASCII files containing coordinate data, meaning you cannot natively view what the board looks like without specialized Electronic Design Automation (EDA) software like KiCad or Autodesk Eagle. Sharing these files with clients, project managers, or non-engineers often leads to frustration, as downloading and configuring a dedicated Gerber viewer is time-consuming, and commercial viewers often require paid licenses for advanced features. If you need to share a PCB layer for review, it is best to convert it to a standard vector or document format. For archiving or sharing with clients, convert .GBR to PDF.
