About GCODE files
A .gcode file is a plain text file containing numerical control (NC) commands used to drive 3D printers and CNC machines. Unlike 3D model files (such as STL or OBJ) which describe the geometry of an object, G-code describes the actions the machine must take to create that object - specific coordinates for tool movement, extrusion speeds, nozzle temperatures, and fan settings. It is typically generated by "slicing" software like Ultimaker Cura or PrusaSlicer.
While .gcode is the standard for production, it poses significant challenges for editing and portability. The primary limitation is that G-code is machine-specific; a file sliced for a Creality Ender 3 cannot be safely run on a Prusa i3 MK3 due to differences in build volume and firmware dialects. Furthermore, users often lose the original source model and find themselves stuck with a "compiled" instruction list that cannot be easily resized or modified. To resolve this, users frequently seek to convert G-code back to STL or OBJ to attempt reverse-engineering the geometry, though this process (voxelization) results in a loss of fidelity compared to the original design. For documentation or analysis, converting G-code to PDF or standard TXT allows for easier sharing of the script commands without requiring specialized viewer software.
Convert.Guru analyzes your GCODE file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.
If you want to convert GCODE file to STL, 3MF, DXF, GX, X3G, OBJ, SVG, DWG, DGN, RVT, RFA or SKP, you can use Ultimaker Cura or similar software from the "CNC Machine Toolpath Instructions" category. In the File menu, look for Save As… or Export….
To convert SLDASM, DGN, PRT, IAM, X_B, CATPRODUCT, SLDPRT, RVT, ASM, DWG, CATPART or DXF files to GCODE, try Ultimaker Cura or another comparable tool in the "CNC Machine Toolpath Instructions" category.
The GCODE Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our GCODE converter.
