Convert a file to TAP
To convert other file formats to the "CNC G-Code Toolpath File" file type, you need software like Mach3 or a similar tool.
About TAP files
The .TAP file extension serves two entirely different primary functions: it stores plain text G-code instructions for CNC (Computer Numerical Control) machines, and it acts as an archival cassette tape image for retro computers like the ZX Spectrum and Commodore 64. In the manufacturing world, CAM (Computer-Aided Manufacturing) software such as Autodesk Fusion 360, SheetCam, and Vectric Aspire generates .TAP files to tell controllers like Mach3 or Fanuc exactly how to move the cutting tool. In the retro gaming space, .TAP files contain binary dumps of old cassette tapes used by early 8-bit computers.
The main disadvantage of .TAP CNC files is extreme hardware dependence. G-code is not universal; a .TAP file compiled with a Fanuc post-processor might physically crash a machine running an Allen-Bradley controller due to subtle syntax differences. For retro computing users, .TAP files are completely unusable in modern operating systems without specialized emulator software.
To safely read, review, or share a CNC toolpath, convert your .TAP file to a standard TXT or NC format. If you need to load retro tape data onto original vintage hardware, convert the .TAP file to WAV to play it back via an audio interface, or to TZX for greater emulator compatibility. If you want to convert TAP file to DXF, ISO, DMG, VHD, VMDK, VDI, HDD, QCOW, QCOW2 or VBOX, you can use Mach3 or similar software from the "CNC Machine Toolpath Instructions" category. In the File menu, look for Save As… or Export….
To convert VFD, DMG, OVA, IMA, VBOX, ADF, PVS, VHD, OVF, ISO, DSK or IMG files to TAP, try Mach3 or another comparable tool in the "CNC Machine Toolpath Instructions" category.
The TAP Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our TAP converter.
