The .GMA file format primarily serves as a Garry's Mod Addon Archive. Used by the sandbox game Garry's Mod, these files package custom user-generated content, including 3D models, textures, sounds, and Lua scripts. Alternatively, .GMA files are used as Garmin Map Authentication files by Garmin BaseCamp to unlock digital maps, or occasionally as Graitec Model Archives built on the 7Z format.
The main disadvantage of the Garry's Mod .GMA file is its proprietary structure. It is an uncompressed archive format that standard extraction software like WinRAR or 7-Zip cannot open. Users are forced to rely on command-line tools like GMAD to access the underlying game assets. Garmin .GMA files present a different challenge: they are cryptographic license keys meant only for machine reading, offering zero human-readable data.
