Convert 3DG to another file type
To convert 3DG 3D models to another format, you need 3D-Tool or other 3D software.
Convert a file to 3DG
To convert other file formats to the "Proprietary 3D Geometry" file type, you need software like 3D-Tool or a similar tool.
About 3DG files
The .3DG file format serves multiple, highly specific roles across different industries. Most commonly, it acts as a proprietary container for 3D car models in the Test Drive Unlimited racing game. In industrial manufacturing, it stores pre-calculated, sliced 3D printer models specifically formatted for BigRep hardware. Additionally, it appears as internal geometry data chunks within AutodeskDWFX files and legacy projects from 3D GameStudio. Users typically encounter these files locked within their native ecosystems. Game models require specialized community modding scripts to extract, while printer files are meant to be sent directly to the machine via BigRep's software or inspected using viewers like 3D-Tool. The biggest disadvantage of a .3DG file is its closed, proprietary nature. You cannot simply open a Test Drive Unlimited car model in standard CAD software because the file is compiled for a specific game engine. Similarly, a sliced 3D printer file is fundamentally different from a raw 3D model; it contains machine-specific instructions and toolpaths rather than editable polygons, making it practically impossible to reverse-engineer back into a pristine CAD model. When extraction is possible, the ideal conversion targets are universal 3D formats like OBJ, FBX, or STL. Standard converters almost always fail to process .3DG files because the data structure is closed, undocumented, and frequently encrypted or compiled. Often, only the original software can properly read or export the data. However, just drag and drop your file to identify the format, view it, and convert it when possible on convert.guru. If our analysis detects a supported underlying or embedded format, viewing or conversion may still be possible.
Convert.Guru analyzes your 3DG file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.
If you want to convert 3DG file to OBJ, FBX, DAE, 3DS, MAX, BLEND, MA, MB, C4D, STL, PLY or WRL, you can use 3D-Tool or similar software from the "3D Model & Printer Data" category. In the File menu, look for Save As… or Export….
To convert DWG, DAE, X3D, IGES, WRL, JT, SKP, 3DS, 3DM, OBJ, STEP or FBX files to 3DG, try 3D-Tool or another comparable tool in the "3D Model & Printer Data" category.
The 3DG Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our 3DG converter.
