About RIG files
The .RIG file extension represents two distinct, professional workflows: guitar audio processing and 3D animation.
1. Kemper Profiler Rig (Audio)
Most frequently, a .RIG file is a preset for the Kemper Profiler, a high-end digital guitar amplifier. These files act as digital snapshots ('profiles') of real tube amplifiers, storing the exact knob positions, cabinet simulations, and effect chain settings (EQ, reverb, delay). While the internal structure is often JSON-based text, the file is locked to the .RIG extension to ensure compatibility with the Rig Manager software and the hardware unit.
Common Friction Points:
- Hardware Dependency: You typically cannot view the specific EQ or Gain settings without loading the file onto a physical Kemper unit or opening it in the proprietary Rig Manager.
- Opaque Data: Musicians often download packs of thousands of .RIG files but have no way to quickly preview the amp model or settings without importing them one by one.
- Version Conflicts: Older firmware versions may not read newer .RIG files.
Best Conversion Targets:
- To Text/JSON: Since the underlying data is structured text, changing the extension to JSON or TXT often allows you to open the file in a text editor to view metadata (Author, Amp Name, Date) without the hardware.
- To PDF: Users often want to print a list of their rig settings for gig reference.
2. 3D Animation Rig (Graphics)
In computer graphics, a .RIG file defines the skeletal hierarchy (bones, joints, and controllers) used to animate 3D characters. These are commonly associated with Autodesk Maya (via scripts like Rapid Rig) or proprietary game engines like REDengine (used by CD Projekt RED).
Common Friction Points:
- Engine Lock-in: A .RIG file created for one game engine (e.g., Cyberpunk 2077) is binary-incompatible with other tools like Blender.
- Complexity: These files contain complex constraints and physics data that rarely convert perfectly to other formats.
Best Conversion Targets:
- To .FBX / .DAE: Converting the skeletal mesh to FBX is the standard workflow for transferring assets between Maya, Unity, and Unreal Engine.
Convert.Guru analyzes your RIG file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.
Users also converted BLEND, G3D, ZIP, FBX, OBJ, GLB, PNG, MTL, LS, LWS, HVX and MESH files.
The RIG Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our RIG converter.
