Convert a file to RIG
To convert other file formats to the "Hardware Preset File" file type, you need software like Kemper Rig Manager or a similar tool.
About RIG files
The .RIG file format primarily functions as a guitar amplifier profile preset for the Kemper Profiler hardware. Secondarily, the extension is used as an animation skeleton resource file within game engines like CD Projekt RED's REDengine and 3D software such as Autodesk Maya. The Kemper variant stores detailed settings that replicate specific amplifier sounds, while the 3D variant stores joint and bone hierarchies for character animation.
To interact with audio presets, users rely on the Kemper Rig Manager. For animation assets, animators typically use Autodesk Maya to build and manipulate the skeletal structures. These files bridge the gap between complex raw data and user-friendly creative interfaces.
Despite their utility, .RIG files come with severe ecosystem limitations. Kemper files are proprietary to their specific hardware, meaning you cannot natively load a .RIG file into competing processors like Neural DSP or Line 6. It forces users into a closed hardware ecosystem. Similarly, 3D animation rigs are notoriously software-specific; a REDengine rig is useless without the proprietary game engine tools, creating major workflow roadblocks.
If you need to share or migrate these files, conversion is necessary. Because Kemper .RIG files are internally formatted as JSON, they can be converted to standard JSON or TXT to extract the raw parameter data. For animation files, exporting the skeleton to a universal FBX or DAE format is highly recommended to preserve joint hierarchies across different 3D applications.
This file format is difficult to open or convert because standard online tools lack the highly specialized parsers required for proprietary hardware data. Often, only the original software can properly read or export the data. Just drag and drop your file to see what it is and convert it if supported. convert.guru can still identify the file format, inspect the file, and show text or internal content. If our analysis detects the supported underlying JSON format, viewing and conversion may still be possible.
Convert.Guru analyzes your RIG file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.
If you want to convert RIG file to MESH, OBJ, FBX, DAE, 3DS, MAX, BLEND, MA, MB, C4D, STL or PLY, you can use Kemper Rig Manager or similar software from the "Settings Preset & Animation Skeleton" category. In the File menu, look for Save As… or Export….
To convert DWG, DAE, X3D, IGES, WRL, JT, SKP, 3DS, 3DM, OBJ, STEP or FBX files to RIG, try Kemper Rig Manager or another comparable tool in the "Settings Preset & Animation Skeleton" category.
The RIG Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our RIG converter.
