About G files
The .g file extension is a versatile container used across three distinct technical domains, making identification critical before conversion. Most commonly, it represents a BRL-CAD Geometry Database, a powerful constructive solid geometry (CSG) format used for over 30 years in military and industrial modeling. These files store procedural geometry rather than simple polygon meshes, meaning they cannot be opened by standard 3D viewers like Blender or AutoCAD without specialized tessellation tools.
Secondly, .g files serve as ANTLR Grammar definitions. These are plain text developer files used by the ANTLR parser generator to define languages and translate code. While they are human-readable, users often need to convert them to standard TXT or PDF for documentation, or compile them into JAVA or CS code.
Thirdly, FlashForge 3D printers use .g as a proprietary wrapper for G-code instructions. Unlike standard GCODE, these files may contain specific headers or binary encoding that prevent them from running on non-FlashForge hardware. Users typically need to convert these back to standard G-code or STL for cross-compatibility.
Best Conversion Targets:
- For BRL-CAD: Convert to STL or OBJ for 3D printing and rendering in modern software.
- For ANTLR: Convert to TXT for universal viewing or PDF for archiving syntax diagrams.
- For FlashForge: Convert to GCODE for inspecting toolpaths or X3G for older MakerBot compatibility.
Convert.Guru analyzes your G file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.
Users also converted G_, GCODE, GX, HTML, ZIP, DPP, DPF, CXF, MG and L files.
The G Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our G converter.
