About GX files
The .gx file is primarily a FlashForge Sliced 3D Printer file. It contains the exact machine instructions required by a 3D printer to construct a physical object layer by layer. FlashPrint creates these files by slicing standard 3D meshes. A small percentage of .gx files are used as amplifier presets for the Guitarix virtual amp, or as geophysical grid data files for Geosoft Oasis montaj.
The main disadvantage of the FlashForge .gx format is its proprietary, closed nature. Unlike standard, open-text machine code, a .gx file includes a binary BMP preview image appended to the beginning of the file. This allows the printer's LCD screen to show a preview, but it causes standard web browsers and generic viewers to fail or freeze. Furthermore, because the file is pre-sliced for a specific printer model, you cannot easily edit it or print it on a different brand of 3D printer.
Users typically want to convert a .gx file to standard GCODE to run it on non-FlashForge machines or to inspect the print parameters. Some users try to convert .gx back to an STL or OBJ 3D model, though this is a destructive reverse-engineering process that often results in severe quality loss.
Because this file format is difficult to open or convert, standard online converters fail to process the custom binary header. Often, only the original software can properly read or export the data. We can inspect the file, identify the underlying data, and extract the embedded text or internal content if supported.
Convert.Guru analyzes your GX file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.
If you want to convert GX file to STL, GCODE, X3G, 3MF or MP4, you can use FlashPrint or similar software from the "3D Printer Machine Code" category. In the File menu, look for Save As… or Export….

The GX Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our GX converter.
