Convert ASM to another file type
To convert your ASM file to another format, you need Siemens Solid Edge or other Cad software.
Convert a file to ASM
To convert other file formats to the "3D Assembly & Source Code" file type, you need software like Siemens Solid Edge or a similar tool.
About ASM files
The .asm extension represents two completely different file types, creating frequent confusion for users.
1. Solid Edge Assembly File (CAD): Most commonly, this is a proprietary 3D assembly file created by Siemens Solid Edge or formerly Pro/ENGINEER. These files act as a "container" that links multiple 3D part files together. The major challenge is that .asm files often do not contain the actual 3D geometry themselves - they reference external part files (par or psm). Without the linked files or the specific version of the expensive CAD software, these files are impossible to view.
For Compatibility: Convert to STEP (STP) or IGES to open the design in SolidWorks or AutoCAD.
2. Assembly Language Source Code (Developer): Alternatively, .asm files act as plain text source code for low-level programming languages (x86, MIPS, RISC-V), processed by assemblers like MASM or NASM. While readable in any text editor, raw text lacks portability for documentation.
Best Conversion Targets:
For Documentation: Convert code to PDF to preserve formatting for archiving.
For Web: Convert to HTML to display code snippets online.
Convert.Guru analyzes your ASM file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.
If you want to convert ASM file to C, PDF, HEX, STEP, OBJ, BIN, TXT, EXE, STP, DWG, DXF or DGN, you can use Siemens Solid Edge or similar software from the "3D CAD Assembly & Code" category. In the File menu, look for Save As… or Export….
To convert SLDASM, DGN, PRT, IAM, X_B, CATPRODUCT, SLDPRT, RVT, DWG, CATPART, DXF or X_T files to ASM, try Siemens Solid Edge or another comparable tool in the "3D CAD Assembly & Code" category.
The ASM Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our ASM converter.
