About PSM files

The .PSM extension primarily identifies Solid Edge Sheet Metal part files, a specialized 3D CAD format developed by Siemens. These files contain precise geometric data, bend tables, and material properties used for manufacturing sheet metal components. Because this is a proprietary format, opening a .PSM file requires a licensed copy of Solid Edge or a dedicated CAD viewer, creating significant friction for users who simply need to view a design or send it to a machine shop. Engineers often face compatibility issues when collaborating with clients using different CAD suites (like SolidWorks or AutoCAD), necessitating conversion to vendor-neutral 3D formats like STEP or IGES for editing, or to 2D formats like DXF and PDF for manufacturing drawings and quotes.

A secondary, distinct use of the .PSM extension is for Protracker Studio Modules, a legacy audio tracker format containing sequenced music data. Unlike standard audio files, these contain note patterns and samples, making them unplayable on modern media players without specific plugins.
