About CFG files

A .CFG file is a generic configuration document that dictates initialization settings, user preferences, and operational parameters for software applications, hardware devices, and video games. Common implementations include storing keybinds for Counter-Strike: Global Offensive, backing up network configurations for ASUS and Netgear routers, or holding generic developer settings for applications like M.U.G.E.N. Because the extension is a catch-all, the required software depends entirely on the underlying format. Many are plain text (UTF-8) and can be opened in text editors like Notepad++.

The core disadvantage of a .CFG file is its complete lack of standardization. You cannot safely assume a .CFG file is readable text. Trying to open a binary router backup in a text editor results in a garbled, unreadable mess of characters. Furthermore, hardware manufacturers like Dahua Technology or Teltonika often use compressed GZIP or ZIP archives disguised as .CFG files. Proprietary game engines and router firmware also lock configuration structures behind undocumented syntaxes, making manual editing risky and prone to breaking the software or bricking the device.

To make these files usable, conversion or extraction is often necessary. For plain text configurations, convert to TXT, JSON, or XML to standardize the formatting for development, editing, and web use. If you are dealing with a compressed router backup, converting or extracting to ZIP or TAR allows you to access the underlying XML or text configs without relying on the original device or proprietary software.

Convert.Guru analyzes your CFG file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

Users also converted TXT, CFG-V5, CONFIG, CFGX, ZIP, CGF, BIN, FO_CFG, CONF, CFG 2, JPG, DAT and RAR files.

FAQ

If you want to convert CFG file to CNF, PDA, PDF, CSV, OBJ, FBX, DAE, 3DS, MAX, BLEND, MA or MB, you can use Text Editors or similar software from the "Software and Device Settings" category. In the File menu, look for Save As… or Export….

The CFG Converter Story

The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our CFG converter.
