About CFG files

The .CFG file format is a ubiquitous container used to store settings, initialization parameters, and user preferences for software applications, hardware devices, and video games. Common implementations include system keybinds for Source Engine games like Counter-Strike, network backups for routers (such as Netgear, ASUS, and D-Link), and application parameters for generic developer tools. Because there is no strict standardized structure enforced for .CFG files, the internal data can range from human-readable plain text or JSON to compiled binaries or GZIP archives used by telemetry devices.

While highly versatile, the lack of standardization is the fundamental disadvantage of the .CFG format. You cannot guarantee that a .CFG file exported by a hardware router will open correctly in standard text editors without displaying garbled binary data. Furthermore, proprietary .CFG files from manufacturers are often encrypted or compressed, making them impossible to modify directly or view on mobile devices without specific diagnostic tools. Sharing raw configuration files over email or web platforms is also highly problematic, as enterprise security filters frequently block them automatically, assuming they are executable system overrides.

To securely view, share, or edit these settings across different platforms, you must convert them into standardized formats. For manual editing and version control, convert .CFG to TXT or XML. If you are building web applications or passing data between APIs, convert the file to JSON or YAML for structured machine-readability. For long-term archiving and safe sharing without triggering email security warnings, convert the file to PDF or compress it into a ZIP archive. Drag and drop your file to analyze and convert it - free, online, and without installing software.

Convert.Guru analyzes your CFG file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

Users also converted TXT, CFG-V5, CONFIG, CFGX, ZIP, CGF, BIN, FO_CFG, CONF, CFG 2, JPG, DAT and RAR files.

The CFG Converter Story

The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our CFG converter.
