About CODE files

A .code file is generally a compiled binary, script, or application cache file. The most common uses include compiled game scripts for the Graal Online game engine, cached V8 JavaScript code for Visual Studio Code, and executable binaries for the Nintendo 3DS handheld console.

Because the extension is generic, it is generated by a wide variety of software environments. Some .code files are simply standard ZIP or Zlib compressed archives in disguise, such as those used by the Ren'Py Visual Novel Engine for packaging game assets, or by BMW NCS Expert software for storing car ECU coding data.

Users often attempt to convert these files because they want to read the underlying code or modify game assets. The major disadvantage of the .code format is that it is typically compiled binary data. This means it is unreadable in standard text editors and highly proprietary to the software that created it. There is no universal structure for a .code file, making standard conversion tools useless.

Depending on the specific file type, your best conversion targets might be extracting the contents to a ZIP archive (for Ren'Py files) or decompiling them to plain text TXT or JS files if you possess the right reverse-engineering tools.

This file format is difficult to open or convert because the internal data depends entirely on the program that created it. Often, only the original software can properly read or export the data. If our analysis detects a supported underlying or embedded archive format, viewing or conversion may still be possible.

Convert.Guru analyzes your CODE file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

Users also converted TXT, HTML, PDF, PY, DOCX, IPYNB, JS, CPP, JAVA, TEX, C, ZIP and XML files.

The CODE Converter Story

The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our CODE converter.
