The .PAR file extension primarily denotes a Solid Edge Part file, a proprietary 3D CAD format developed by Siemens Digital Industries Software. These files store detailed geometric data, feature histories, and material properties for single mechanical components. While powerful for engineering, .PAR files present significant collaboration hurdles: they cannot be opened by standard image viewers, web browsers, or competing CAD software like AutoCAD without expensive translation plugins. Furthermore, version incompatibility is common; a file saved in a newer version of Solid Edge often fails to open in older installations.
To overcome these barriers, engineers and designers frequently convert .PAR files to neutral formats.
