The .MAX file extension primarily represents a proprietary 3D scene project created by Autodesk 3ds Max. Alternatively, older enterprise archives may contain .MAX files generated by Nuance PaperPort (now Tungsten Automation), functioning as scanned raster document containers.

Users encounter severe workflow friction because standalone third-party applications (like Blender) cannot natively parse the file's uncollapsed modifier stacks or third-party plugin data (such as V-Ray or Corona).
