About VMD files
The .VMD file format primarily stores 3D motion data for MikuMikuDance, a popular freeware animation program. It dictates the movement of 3D models, including bones, facial expressions, and camera angles, over a specific timeline. A secondary use is a script file for Visual Molecular Dynamics to load specific chemical visualization states. Other obsolete uses include legacy Sierra Entertainment video files. .VMD files are highly proprietary and rigid. MMD motion data is completely useless outside of the MMD ecosystem without specialized import plugins for software like Blender. The files do not contain the actual 3D meshes or textures, only the skeletal animation keyframes. For the VMD molecular scripts, they require the exact local file paths to the original dataset (like PDB files) to work correctly, making them prone to breaking when shared between different computers. For 3D animation workflows, convert .VMD to BVH or FBX to import the motion data directly into Blender or Unity. For viewing molecular models without specialized software, export the VMD state to STL for 3D printing or PDF for 2D viewing. If your .VMD is a legacy Sierra game video, convert it to MP4 for playback on modern media players. Just drag and drop your file here to analyze and convert it securely right in your browser.

The VMD Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our VMD converter.
