The .CATPRODUCT file is a proprietary 3D CAD assembly file created by CATIA V5, a high-end commercial CAD software developed by Dassault Systèmes. It stores assembly structure data, meaning it links multiple individual CATPART (part) files together and defines their spatial coordinates, constraints, and relationships. Crucially, it does not store the actual 3D solid geometry of the individual parts.
Because CATIA is expensive enterprise software, users without a license face significant roadblocks. Sharing .CATPRODUCT files is problematic because recipients usually cannot open them natively.
