About AWD files
The .AWD extension is a "container of confusion" because it serves three distinct, incompatible purposes, often leaving users unable to open their files without the specific software that created them.
- Microsoft Fax (At Work Document): Historically, this format was used by Microsoft Fax to store digital faxes. These files are effectively legacy bitmaps. The primary challenge is that modern image viewers and default Windows apps often fail to recognize them, leaving crucial business documents inaccessible. Converting these to PDF or TIFF is essential for archiving and viewing on modern devices.
- Away3D (Away Data): In the realm of web graphics, .AWD files store 3D models and scenes for the Away3D engine (Flash-based). While optimized for web performance, these binary files are difficult to edit or import into standard 3D suites like Blender or Autodesk Maya. Creators typically need to convert them to OBJ, FBX, or GLTF for interoperability.
- Artweaver Document: Users of the digital painting tool Artweaver save projects as .AWD to preserve layers and transparency. Sharing these files with clients who don't have Artweaver installed is problematic. For sharing or web publishing, these must be converted to JPG, PNG, or PSD (for Adobe Photoshop compatibility).
Rather than hunting for legacy drivers or specific 3D engines, use a specialized converter to transform your .AWD file into a usable format immediately.

The AWD Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our AWD converter.
