To convert other file formats to the "Uncompressed Image Data" file type, you need software like Adobe Lightroom or a similar tool.
About ARW files
The .ARW file is a proprietary camera raw image format used by Sony Alpha digital cameras. Based on the TIFF specification, it stores minimally processed, uncompressed or losslessly compressed sensor data. Professional photographers use it because it retains maximum dynamic range, color depth, and detail for post-processing. To open an .ARW file locally, you need specialized raw processing software like Adobe Photoshop Lightroom, Capture One, or Sony's own Imaging Edge. However, .ARW files are highly impractical for daily use. They are massive, often exceeding 50MB to 100MB per photo. They are completely unedited by the camera, meaning they look flat and dull until manually processed. Furthermore, web browsers, email clients, and standard document editors cannot open them natively. To use these images in the real world, you must convert them. For web publishing or social media, convert to WEBP or JPG to drastically reduce the file size and make them universally viewable. For archiving processed images without quality loss, use TIFF. If you want an open-standard raw format for long-term compatibility, convert to DNG. Just drag and drop your file here to analyze and convert it - free, online, and without installing heavy software.

The ARW Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our ARW converter.
