Convert 3DM to another file type

To convert 3DM 3D models to another format, you need Rhinoceros or other 3D software.

Convert a file to 3DM

To convert other file formats to the "NURBS Modeling File" file type, you need software like Rhinoceros or a similar tool.

About 3DM files

The .3dm file format is the native file type used by Rhinoceros 3D (often called Rhino), an advanced 3D computer graphics and computer-aided design (CAD) application. It stores NURBS (Non-Uniform Rational B-Splines) geometry, which allows for mathematically precise representation of curves and freeform surfaces instead of approximations using polygons. You can open these files natively using Rhinoceros on Windows or Mac. Other software like Autodesk Fusion 360 or FreeCAD can import them thanks to the openNURBS initiative. You can learn more about the software on its Wikipedia page. The main disadvantage of the .3dm format is its specialized nature. Sharing a .3dm file with a client or manufacturer who does not own a paid Rhino license often leads to compatibility issues. Most standard web browsers, document viewers, and standard operating systems cannot preview these files natively. Because of this, you usually need to convert .3dm to universal 3D formats before sharing. Convert to STL for 3D printing. Convert to OBJ or FBX for rendering in animation software. Convert to STEP or IGES for engineering and solid modeling CAD software. Be aware that converting NURBS data to polygon mesh formats like OBJ will permanently alter the mathematical curves into flat triangles, meaning you lose precise scaling and surface continuity. This file format is difficult to open or convert online because standard online converters lack the complex math libraries required to process NURBS geometry. Often only the original software can properly read or export the exact data. However, just drag and drop your file onto convert.guru to identify the format, inspect the file, and show text or internal content. If our analysis detects a supported underlying or embedded format, viewing or conversion may still be possible.

Convert.Guru analyzes your 3DM file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

Users also converted DM, 3D, JCD, DM3, RHL, PDF, SKP, IFC, STL, BIP, MTL, MAX and 3DF files.

FAQ

If you want to convert 3DM file to STL, OBJ, SKP, FBX, DWG, STEP, GLB, STP, DAE, 3DS, MAX or BLEND, you can use Rhinoceros or similar software from the "3D NURBS Modeling" category. In the File menu, look for Save As… or Export….

To convert DWG, DAE, X3D, IGES, WRL, JT, SKP, 3DS, OBJ, STEP, FBX or PLY files to 3DM, try Rhinoceros or another comparable tool in the "3D NURBS Modeling" category.

The 3DM Converter Story

The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our 3DM converter.
