About AVIF files
The .AVIF (AV1 Image File Format) is an advanced, royalty-free raster image format created by the Alliance for Open Media. It uses the AV1 video codec algorithms packed inside an MP4-like container to deliver excellent compression. Web developers primarily use .AVIF to dramatically reduce webpage load times while supporting modern features like High Dynamic Range (HDR), transparency, and animations. You can natively open these files in modern web browsers like Google Chrome or Mozilla Firefox, and edit them in newer versions of Adobe Photoshop or GIMP.
Despite its technical superiority, the format faces significant real-world compatibility limits. Legacy operating systems, older versions of Safari, and older image viewer apps cannot open .AVIF files natively. In Windows 10, for example, users are often forced to download an extension from the Microsoft Store just to view the image. Many standard email clients, chat applications, and social media platforms will also reject .AVIF uploads outright. This makes sharing these files with non-technical users highly problematic.
To guarantee your image opens everywhere, you must convert it to a legacy format. Just drag and drop your file here to analyze and convert it securely right in your browser. For maximum compatibility on the web or in emails, convert to JPG. If your image contains a transparent background, convert to PNG. If you want a balance of high compatibility and small file size for modern web development, convert to WEBP.

The AVIF Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our AVIF converter.
