About AWB files
The .awb extension represents two distinct audio formats, creating a common point of confusion for users.
1. AMR-WB Audio (Mobile Speech)
The most common use is Adaptive Multi-Rate Wideband, a high-definition speech compression format developed by Nokia and standardized by 3GPP. Unlike standard phone audio, it supports a wider frequency range (50 Hz–7 kHz), making voice recordings sound clearer. It is often used for:
Android voice notes and call recordings.
Nokia True Tones.
VoLTE (Voice over LTE) transmission data.
The Problem: While efficient for speech, .awb files are rarely supported by default media players (like Windows Media Player or QuickTime) and cannot be uploaded to social media or podcast platforms. The Solution: For general listening or sharing, convert these files to MP3 or AAC.
2. CRIWARE Game Audio (AFS2 Archive)
In gaming, .awb stands for Audio Wave Bank. It is a proprietary archive format from CRI Middleware (CRIWARE) used to package music, voice lines, and sound effects in popular titles like Persona 5, Yakuza, and Sonic.
The Problem: These are not simple audio files but containers (specifically AFS2 archives) that hold multiple audio streams (often HCA or ADX format) inside a single file. You cannot simply "play" them without extracting the contents first. They are often accompanied by a acb control file. The Solution: To access the music inside, the archive must be processed to extract and convert the internal streams into WAV or MP3.

The AWB Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our AWB converter.
