About XMP files

The .XMP (Extensible Metadata Platform) file is an XML-based sidecar file developed by Adobe to standardize metadata handling across photography workflows. Unlike JPG or TIFF files, an XMP file does not contain actual image pixels; instead, it stores vital information about an image, such as camera settings (EXIF), copyright details (IPTC), and non-destructive editing parameters (exposure, contrast, cropping) generated by software like Adobe Lightroom or Camera Raw.

The primary challenge users face with .XMP files is the misconception that they are image files. Attempting to open an XMP file in a standard photo viewer will result in an error or display raw XML code rather than a visual picture. Furthermore, because XMP files are often generated as separate "sidecars" to accompany proprietary RAW formats (like CR2 or NEF), they can easily be separated from their parent image during file transfers, resulting in the loss of hours of editing work.

For archiving or programmatic use, converting .XMP to JSON or standard XML allows developers to easily parse metadata without proprietary libraries. For photographers looking to "convert" the XMP into a viewable image, the actual process requires processing the original RAW file alongside the XMP in Adobe Bridge or Lightroom and exporting the result as a flattened JPG, PNG, or TIFF.

Convert.Guru analyzes your XMP file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

Users also converted LUT, LRTEMPLATE, DNG, CUBE, XPM, ZIP, JPG, TXT, PNG, XML, COSTYLE, 3DL and JPEG files.

The XMP Converter Story

The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our XMP converter.
