About XMP files

The .XMP file is an Extensible Metadata Platform sidecar file developed by Adobe. It is primarily used to store metadata, tags, and non-destructive image edits applied to raw camera files (like CR2 or NEF). Behind the scenes, .XMP is simply an XML document. When you edit a raw photo in Adobe Lightroom or Adobe Camera Raw, the software creates a companion .XMP file rather than altering the original image data.

A secondary, far less common use for the .XMP extension is the XMind Markers Package, which stores custom icon sets for the XMind mind-mapping software.

The biggest disadvantage of .XMP sidecar files is the confusion they cause. Users often mistake them for actual image files and try to open or convert them to JPG. Because .XMP files contain zero pixel data, this is impossible. Furthermore, sidecar files clutter your hard drive and must be meticulously managed; if an .XMP file is separated from its parent raw file, all your post-processing edits are instantly lost.

Since .XMP files are just structured text, converting them is about data extraction. For auditing metadata or writing scripts, convert .XMP to TXT, JSON, or clean XML.

Convert.Guru analyzes your XMP file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

Users also converted LUT, LRTEMPLATE, DNG, CUBE, XPM, ZIP, JPG, TXT, PNG, XML, COSTYLE, 3DL and JPEG files.

The XMP Converter Story

The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our XMP converter.
