About 3DL files
A .3DL file is most commonly a 3D Look-Up Table (LUT) used in professional color grading and digital compositing. Originally popularized by Autodesk (Discreet) systems and widely supported by Adobe Photoshop, these files map input color values to specific output colors to create cinematic looks (e.g., "Teal and Orange") or calibrate monitors.
While powerful, .3DL files often cause friction in modern workflows. They are frequently ASCII text-based but can vary in header structure, causing compatibility errors in newer Non-Linear Editors (NLEs) like DaVinci Resolve or Final Cut Pro, which heavily favor the industry-standard CUBE format. Furthermore, high-resolution 3DL files (e.g., 64x64x64 lattices) can be computationally expensive or simply fail to load in consumer photo viewers. To fix compatibility issues, users should convert .3DL files to CUBE for video editing, ICC for display profiling, or CSP for specific Autodesk workflows.
A secondary, distinct use of the .3DL extension is for iGO Navigation 3D landmarks. These are binary files containing 3D building geometries for GPS units. These are strictly proprietary, often encrypted, and notoriously difficult to convert to standard meshes like OBJ or STL without specialized extraction tools.
Convert.Guru analyzes your 3DL file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.
Users also converted LUT, CUBE, XMP, ZIP, DNG, LOOK, JPG, MP4, SKP, PNG, G3D, AUP3 and AAE files.
The 3DL Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our 3DL converter.
