A .3DL file is primarily a 3D Color Look-Up Table (LUT) used to map input colors to output colors in professional photo and video editing software like Adobe Photoshop, After Effects, and Autodesk tools. Alternatively, it serves as a 3D Landmark Data File for iGO Navigation and HERE Maps to render 3D buildings on GPS hardware screens.
The main disadvantage of the .3DL LUT format is its limited modern compatibility. It often requires heavy, expensive subscription software to open, and it has largely been superseded by the more universal CUBE standard in the video production industry. You cannot view these files natively on standard desktop operating systems or mobile browsers. If your .3DL is a map file, the limitations are even stricter: the data is highly proprietary, encrypted, and locked strictly to NNG/HERE navigation hardware.
For professional color grading workflows, we strongly recommend converting .3DL to CUBE, CSP, or CSV. Converting to CUBE guarantees seamless compatibility with modern Non-Linear Editors (NLEs) like DaVinci Resolve or Final Cut Pro.
Because both variations of this file format are either proprietary or require niche color-math algorithms to parse, standard online converters typically fail.
