To convert other file formats to the "Canon Raw Image" file type, you need software like Adobe Lightroom or a similar tool.
About CR2 files
The .CR2 file extension represents a Canon RAW 2 Image, a proprietary raw format generated by Canon digital cameras. Built on the TIFF specification, it stores uncompressed image data exactly as captured by the camera sensor, preserving maximum dynamic range and color detail.
However, .CR2 files are frustrating to manage for everyday users. Because they hold raw sensor data, file sizes easily exceed 25MB to 50MB per photo. They are completely unsupported by web browsers and most standard image viewers. Opening them natively often requires installing heavy, expensive software like Adobe Photoshop, which locks you into a monthly subscription. Sharing a raw .CR2 via email or social media is virtually impossible without processing it first.
To make these photos usable, you must convert them. For web use and fast sharing, convert .CR2 to JPG or WEBP. If you need to edit the image later in other software without losing quality, convert to TIFF. For long-term archiving that prevents vendor lock-in, convert to DNG (Digital Negative). Drag and drop your file here to analyze and convert it - free, online, and without installing software.

The CR2 Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our CR2 converter.
