The .costyle file is a proprietary preset used by Capture One, a professional photo editing and tethering software originally developed by Phase One. It stores specific image adjustment parameters - such as color balance, exposure, contrast, high dynamic range recovery, and tone curves. Photographers use these files to apply a consistent color grade or "look" across batches of RAW images quickly.
While highly effective inside its native ecosystem, the .costyle format is extremely restricted. It is a closed, proprietary file type that requires a paid Capture One subscription or perpetual license to utilize. The most significant disadvantage is that these files are entirely incompatible with competing, industry-standard photo editors like Adobe Lightroom or Camera Raw. You cannot directly share these presets with clients or team members who use different software, creating severe workflow bottlenecks.
Users frequently need to convert .costyle files to XMP for Adobe ecosystem compatibility, or to CUBE (3D LUT) files for video grading in software like DaVinci Resolve. Because the underlying math and raw processing engines of Capture One and Adobe are fundamentally different, a perfect 1:1 automated conversion is virtually impossible without specialized third-party LUT generators.
Because this is a closed, undocumented format, standard online converters fail to process it. Usually, only the original software can properly read or export the adjustment data.
