About LUT files

A .lut (Look-Up Table) file is a data array used to transform input values into predefined output values. These files serve two radically different primary purposes: adjusting physics and force feedback (FFB) in racing simulators like Assetto Corsa, and applying cinematic color grades in video/image software such as DaVinci Resolve or Adobe Photoshop. They are also used in scientific imaging tools like ImageJ to map false colors to neuroimaging data.

The main disadvantage of the .lut format is its extreme fragmentation. Because 'Look-Up Table' is a mathematical concept rather than a strict file standard, a .lut file from a racing game is completely incompatible with a video editor, and vice versa. Furthermore, there is no standard encoding - some are plain ASCII text, some use UTF-16, and others are compiled binaries. This causes frequent import failures, 'unsupported format' errors, and locks users out of their data if they switch software.

To bypass these workflow roadblocks, you need to convert the file into a standardized format. For video editing and color grading, convert your .lut to the industry-standard CUBE or 3DL format. For editing racing simulator data or force feedback curves, convert it to TXT or CSV to easily manipulate the values in a spreadsheet.

Convert.Guru analyzes your LUT file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

Users also converted CUBE, DNG, XMP, 3DL, PNG, ILUT, LOOK, JPG, AML, BMCPRESET, !UT, ZIP and TXT files.

The LUT Converter Story

The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our LUT converter.
