The .xfl extension serves two distinct, technical masters, creating a frequent point of confusion. Primarily, it is the native project format for XFLR5, a specialized engineering tool used to analyze airfoils and wing aerodynamics via XFoil. These files store complex polars, foil geometries, and stability analysis data that are fundamentally incompatible with standard office software. Engineers often struggle to share this data with non-technical stakeholders because the file requires the specific analysis environment to view; it is effectively a "black box" to anyone without the software installed.
