About XFL files

The .xfl extension serves two distinct, technical masters, creating a frequent point of confusion. Primarily, it is the native project format for XFLR5, a specialized engineering tool used to analyze airfoils and wing aerodynamics via XFoil. These files store complex polars, foil geometries, and stability analysis data that are fundamentally incompatible with standard office software. Engineers often struggle to share this data with non-technical stakeholders because the file requires the specific analysis environment to view; it is effectively a "black box" to anyone without the software installed. For reporting, documentation, or further processing, you should convert these analysis results to PDF for static viewing or export the raw numerical data to CSV for use in Microsoft Excel.

Secondarily, .xfl represents an uncompressed, XML-based project file for Adobe Animate (formerly Flash Professional). Unlike the standard binary FLA file, the XFL format explodes an animation project into a folder structure of XML assets and images. While this allows developers to use version control systems like Git, it can create major obstacles for sharing: the "file" is actually a directory that cannot be emailed or uploaded to web converters without first being archived. To make this usable, users typically need to compress the folder or open it in Animate to save it as a standard, single-file FLA or publish it to .HTML5 Canvas for web compatibility.

Convert.Guru analyzes your XFL file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

Users also converted FLA, XML, XLF, PDF, FXL, ANA, ZIP, TXT, PNG, MP4, JPG, AS and EDGE files.

The XFL Converter Story

The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our XFL converter.
