About XTF files

An .XTF file is primarily an eXtended Triton Format file, the marine industry standard used for recording hydrographic sonar, shallow seismic, and bathymetry data. In other domains, it functions as an INTERLIS geospatial data transfer file based on XML, an extended TIFF or JPEG 2000 image from AccuSoft or AVL Software, or an X-ray tomography image from Nikon Metrology.

Professionals rely on specialized desktop applications like SonarWiz, QINSy, or FME Desktop to read and process these files. The main disadvantage of the .XTF format is its highly specialized, often proprietary nature. Hydrographic .XTF files can exceed several gigabytes, require expensive software licenses (sometimes costing thousands of dollars) to open, and are completely unreadable by native operating systems or standard web browsers.

Users typically need to convert .XTF files to share data with non-technical stakeholders. The best conversion targets are CSV for tabular data analysis, SHP for broad GIS compatibility, or PDF and standard TIFF for visual charts. Note that converting raw sonar or tomography data into standard formats often strips out valuable sensor metadata and depth calibration layers.

Because .XTF is a heavily fragmented file extension with multiple proprietary binary definitions, standard online converters almost always fail to process it. Usually, only the original hardware software can properly demultiplex the sensor arrays. If our analysis detects an underlying XML structure (like an INTERLIS file) or embedded standard imagery, we can often extract the contents for you.

Convert.Guru analyzes your XTF file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

Users also converted XLF, XIF, XCF, SDOCX, BAI, GX and EXPORT files.

FAQ

If you want to convert XTF file to OBJ, FBX, DAE, 3DS, MAX, BLEND, MA, MB, C4D, STL, PLY or WRL, you can use SonarWiz or similar software from the "Hydrographic Sonar Data Storage" category. In the File menu, look for Save As… or Export….

To convert DWG, DAE, X3D, IGES, WRL, JT, SKP, 3DS, 3DM, OBJ, STEP or FBX files to XTF, try SonarWiz or another comparable tool in the "Hydrographic Sonar Data Storage" category.

The XTF Converter Story

The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our XTF converter.
