Convert a file to XDELTA
To convert other file formats to the "Binary Delta Patch File" file type, you need software like xdelta or a similar tool.
About XDELTA files
The .xdelta file is a binary delta patch file. It contains the exact byte-level differences between an old file and a new file. Developers, translators, and modders use it to distribute software updates or game modifications efficiently without sharing the entire copyrighted base file. Created by Joshua McDonald for the open-source xdelta utility, these files are heavily utilized in software distribution and video game ROM hacking.
Users typically encounter .xdelta files when downloading fan translations or system mods. The main disadvantage of this format is that it is entirely useless on its own. It is not an archive or a standalone document. You must possess the exact, unmodified original file to apply the patch. If the base file has even one incorrect byte, the patching process will fail with a checksum error.
Because .xdelta contains only raw differences, direct conversion to standard formats like ZIP or PDF is technically impossible. You must first use a tool like xdelta UI to apply the patch to your local base file. Once patched, you obtain the target file (usually an ISO, ROM, or EXE), which can then be played, converted, or compressed.
This file format is exceptionally difficult to open or convert online because standard cloud converters do not have access to your local base file to process the math. Often, only the original command-line utility or dedicated frontends can properly read or export the patched data. If our analysis detects a supported underlying or embedded format, viewing or limited conversion may still be possible.
Convert.Guru analyzes your XDELTA file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.
If you want to convert XDELTA file to NDS, ZIP, ISO, IPS, Z64, CSV, JSON, XML, YAML, YML, TOML or INI, you can use xdelta or similar software from the "Binary File Patching" category. In the File menu, look for Save As… or Export….
To convert DBF, XML, SQLITE, XLSX, SQL, TSV, ACCDB, YAML, MDB, CSV, ODS or JSON files to XDELTA, try xdelta or another comparable tool in the "Binary File Patching" category.
The XDELTA Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our XDELTA converter.
